Differential perception of tonal contours through the syllable
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper proposes a model of differential tonal perception in which perception of tonal movement in spoken language i s influenced by syllable structure. In the proposed model, tonal movement at syllable onset is perceptually coded differently from movement in the syllable nucleus or in the coda. An F0 contour through the syllable onset or at the beginning of the nucleus is coded as a level tone while a contour through the nucleus or at the beginning of the coda is coded as a contour tone.

Perception of Pitch and Tonal Timing: Implications for Mechanisms of Tonogenesis
This paper presents a discussion of tonal categories relating to pitch perception discrimination thresholds and the differences between pitch perception and the perception of tonal timing. Based on the results of a perception experiment using Swedish listeners and tonal timing results from the literature, this paper proposes perceptual mechanisms which may help explain the development of contou...
متن کاملAsymmetric processing of lexical tonal contrast in Swedish.
Languages such as Swedish use suprasegmental information such as tone, over and above segments, to mark lexical contrast. Theories differ with respect to the abstractness and specification of tone in the mental lexicon. In a forced choice task, we tested Swedish listeners' responses to words with segmentally identical first syllables differing in tonal contours (characterized as Accents 1 and 2...
متن کاملThe role of time in phonetic spaces: Temporal resolution in Cantonese tone perception
The role of temporal resolution in speech perception (e.g. whether tones are parameterized with fundamental frequency sampled every 10 ms, or just twice in the syllable) is sometimes overlooked, and the temporal resolution relevant for tonal perception is still an open question. The choice of temporal resolution matters because how we understand the recognition, dispersion, and learning of phon...
متن کاملSyllable perception depends on tone perception
We conducted a perception study on Mandarin, a tone language where pitch carries contrastive information, to investigate whether pitch changes interfere with spectral information in determining the number of syllables in an utterance. We generated F0 contours and simulated tonal coarticulation using the qTA model [1]. The perception of syllable numbers depended on the perception of tones, and t...
متن کاملPerception of Tonal Contours in Med0mba
This paper explores cues to contour tone perception in Med0mba, a Grassfields Bantu language of Cameroon. Like many Bantu languages, Med0mba contrasts only level high (H) and low (L) tones, but contour tones can result where H and L tones associate to a single syllable. Here, we examine the relative influence of vowel duration and tonal slope in Med0mba speakers’ perception of contour tones, as...
